One of the biggest challenges faced by India and few developing / underdeveloped countries is the access to pure drinking water, especially in rural areas where people often suffer from water borne ailments by drinking impure water.
Niranjan Kargi a final year engineering student has finally come up with the solution to this, with his knowledge and great efforts, he has invented the cheapest water purifier “NIRNAL” costing just Rs.20/- so that the basic necessity of every individual to access pure water can be fulfilled.
Working, Construction and how to use it?
- It has a simple design and works as a pre-filter, which includes a plastic cover enclosing activated carbon , cotton , netted mesh and an additional element( confidential ) ,which purifies water up-to 70% making it potable.
- As the water passese through the filter it initially removes Chlorine , salts and odour from the water, then floating particles , sediments and remaining impurities are purified by cotton and netted mesh.
- It can be used by anyone above 5 years, just fill the pet bottle after inserting the filter into it and give a light shake to the bottle it will filter out impurities and sediments as you drink it.
Pros:
- Has long life span ( Can purify upto 100 liters of water ,depending upon the type of water )
- Only existing water filter at such a low cost of Rs.20/- , so even middle class and poor people can afford it.
- Quite handy so can easily be carried by trek lovers, Army men , farmers and school children.
- Has a small size, which makes it easily fit in pet bottles .
- Very compatible, Healthy , Reusable portable and also eco-freindly .
Cons :
The only complaint reported so far is filter doesn’t fit wide mouthed pet bottles, but Niranjan says he is working upon the design with adjustable breadth and a sipper which will be launched soon.
Achievements:
- NIRNAL is been aprroved by the “ Food Divisional Officer ” as a safe product.
- Since it’s launch in July 2016 it has sold upto 12,000 units in Belgaum, Raichur , Dharwad and various nearby villages along with government Schools and institutions.
- NIRNAL has won the ” Best Leader Award ” in Yuva summit of Deshpande Foundation.
- Niranjan ‘s filter has also received first prize at the stage of TALAASH delighted by Mr. C.M. Patil (CEO, Sandbox Startups) , Mr. NAVEEN JHA (CEO, Deshpande Foundation), Mr. SASI SEKAR KRISH (CEO, nanoPix), Dr. BASAVARAJ S ANAMI (principal, KLEIT).
- Awarded with a seed fund of 5 lakh from nanoPix Company and incubation support from Deshpande Foundation’s Sandbox Startups.
- Niranajan has also presented his idea before media in many television shows.
- The filter has set it’s benchmark not only in India but recently has received orders from Qatar, Singapore and Africa as well.
Niranjan says ,soon the company “NIRNAL Enterprises” will be launching their new version (Having a sipper and adjustable width band )for almost the same cost.
